The best free activities to do with your kids in August

When the weather is hot and camp has ended for the summer, it’s easy to get on each other’s nerves in a small, city apartment. With money being tight and kids nagging us for things to do, we may feel triggered, anxious and frustrated. These feelings are completely normal, and knowing that you’re not alone can make them easier to bear.  But getting out and changing your environment can make all the difference. Here are five free activities to do with your kids if you’re cash-strapped and frustrated. We hear you!

  1. Brooklyn Bridge Park. This 1.3 mile park offers something for everyone: fish, kayak, walk the path, visit the fantastic and unique playgrounds, catch a free outdoor movie, splash in the water or check out the amazing city views. It’s all free and all in one place.
  2. NYC beaches. NYC is home to some pretty amazing and unique beaches that you can’t find anywhere else in the world. Our most famous, Coney Island, is a truly special place with sand, a boardwalk and lots of amusements to visit as well. You can have a great time just walking the boardwalk and checking out the scene, and the best part, it’s just a subway ride away!
  3. Splash pads. Our splash pads are some of the best around and offer a cool spot to hang out with minimal effort. Grab your towels, swimsuits, sunscreen and waterproof shoes and you’ll be amazed at how long your kids will stay occupied.
  4. The Bronx Zoo. One of the largest and most beautiful zoos in the northeast, the Bronx Zoo is a spectacular day trip destination. This zoo offers a monorail and so many animals you’ll easily be able to spend an entire day checking out the exhibits. The zoo is free on Wednesdays but make sure you reserve your tickets ahead of time.
  5. Little Island. One of NYC’s most interesting parks, Little Island, is located off the West Side of Manhattan and sits on top of floating “tulips” on the water. This park offers winding paths, gorgeous landscaping and plenty of trees and flowers to make you feel like you’ve truly escaped the city.

We know that summer can be a difficult time if you’ve experienced domestic violence and abuse, and we want you to know that you’re never alone. If you’re interested in learning more about our support groups and other programs, check us out here or reach out to us at info@women4womenbk.org
